While the sun and stars did battle over the sparkling sea, beneath this half-breed sky, slipped a shadow upon sand and stone, a deft slippered foot weaving through the crooked and cramped back alleys of Shahrazad. Not an eye lay upon him, and his passing would go unknown to the children who slept sound in their beds, to the weaver rolling up the rugs that hadn't sold that day, and the old tired fisherman who hadn't noticed a shadow pass over his open window. Amurru, the shepherd boy lay on his side, ear flat against a smooth gray boulder amid green and endless fields. His eyes were shut - the wolves were gone by summer, and he knew the flock would be safe, even so, the boy always feared his father might somehow come to the knowledge that he had even for a moment left the flock from his sight. But with his eyes open, he could not feel it quite so well, nor hear the coming frigates and cargo liners.
